Committed to sharing best practices and supporting the implementation of the Worker Welfare Principle by a large audience, Building Responsibly is publishing a series of case study examples that illustrate actions taken by Board Members to practically implement the Worker Welfare Principles. This first case study illustrates VINCI/QDVC’s work to apply Building Responsibly Principle 3: Recruitment Practices Are Ethical, Legal, Voluntary, and Free from Discrimination. It provides non-exhaustive information on the ethical recruitment challenges faced by the company in Qatar, and practical examples of the strategy and solutions put in place to address these issues.

 

Building Responsibly Guidance Notes ON the worker welfare priNciples

Building Responsibly has released a series of Guidance Notes developed to help promote worker welfare in the engineering and construction industry. These Notes build on the Worker Welfare Principles launched by the collaboration in June 2018 and have been informed by multiple consultations with external stakeholders.

The factsheets below provide a review of existing laws and regulations pertaining to the employment of migrant workers in Middle Eastern countries and has been written by the International Labour Organization Regional Fair Migration in the Middle East Project with support from DLA Piper.

The factsheets have been developed to increase accessibility to country-specific laws for a wide variety of stakeholders. These papers are intended to be practical reference points and tools to support the work of Building Responsibly as it seeks to raise standards and employ best practices on worker welfare issues worldwide.

 

Building Responsibly Business Case Brief

Building Responsibly has released the first in a series of briefs focused on the business case for engineering and construction companies to promote the rights and welfare of workers. This brief has been developed by industry-leading companies – in dialogue with experts from academia, civil society, government, and corporate law – to look at the increasing array of stakeholder and regulatory drivers that create a robust case for companies to implement responsible human rights policies and practices.

 

Addressing Workers’ Rights in Engineering and Construction: Opportunities for Collaboration

BSR conducted research to assess the feasibility of setting up a collaborative initiative that would address challenges that engineering and construction companies face to uphold workers’ rights in their operations and subcontracting supply chains. This research and report was supported by Humanity United in collaboration with CH2M.
